South Africa name two new caps for Wales Test

South Africa named two new caps Saturday in an experimental team for a one-off Test against Wales on June 5 in Cardiff.

The reigning world champions chose Gio Aplon from Super 14 finalists Western Stormers on the right wing and franchise team-mate Francois Louw has been given one of the flanker berths.

With Stormers playing fellow South Africans Northern Bulls in the southern hemisphere championship final on May 29, Springbok coach Peter de Villiers picked only six of those featuring in the final among his starting XV.

Lock Andries Bekker and surprise scrum-half selection Ricky Januarie complete the Stormers contingent while Bulls lock Danie Rossouw and flanker Dewald Potgieter got the nod.

De Villiers bended his rule of not considering a foreign-based player if a local of equal ability is available by giving places to six South Africans performing across Europe.

They are Racing Metro fullback Frans Steyn, Munster centre Jean de Villiers, Bath centre Butch James, Leinster loosehead prop CJ van der Linde, Ulster tigthead prop BJ Botha and Toulon number eight Joe van Niekerk.

"All six are talented and four have played for the Boks during the past 12 months," said the coach, who succeeded Jake White after South Africa beat England in the 2007 World Cup final.

"The other two, Butch James and Joe van Niekerk, have not played for us since 2008, but both are quality footballers who have been in good form for their teams."

After Cardiff, South Africa will name a fresh squad for Tests against Six Nations champions France in Cape Town on June 12 and Italy in Witbank on June 19 and East London one week later.
