Leeds back on track as champs see off Dragons

Brett Delaney was the star of the show as reigning champions Leeds Rhinos got their Super League defence back on track with a 34-24 victory over Catalans Dragons on Monday.

The ex-Gold Coast Titans back - who joined Leeds during the off-season - scored one of six tries for the Rhinos as they held off a late fightback in France.

Leeds were in control throughout the game and led 26-12 at half-time but a try from New Zealander Kane Bentley put the Dragons back in touch.

However, a second try from Danny McGuire late in the game ensured Leeds picked up their first victory since a 62-4 win against Harlequins on March 5.

Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Ali Lauitiiti and Keith Senior all scored for Brian McClennan's men while Jerome Guisset, Dallas Johnson and Julien Touxagas registered for Catalans.

Pat Richards continued his stunning start to the Super League season as he scored a hat-trick in table-topping Wigan's 54-14 win against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

The former Wests wing scored three tries as well as kicking seven goals for a 26-point haul at the DW Stadium.

Ex-Sydney back Amos Roberts, who was later rushed to hospital with a suspected broken leg, scored two first-half tries while Darrell Goulding also picked up a hat-trick as Michael Maguire's men remain top of the table.

Full-back Matt Blaymire bagged a double for the Wildcats while Damien Blanch got his name on the scoresheet but John Kear's men failed to fight their way back from a 32-0 half-time deficit.

Ex-Canberra Raiders half-back Michael Dobson scored 20 points to ensure Hull KR cured their derby-day hangover with a 52-12 victory over struggling Harlequins.

Rovers had slipped to an 18-14 defeat over fierce rivals Hull FC on Good Friday but Dobson scored one of nine goals and kicked eight goals as they ran riot at The Stoop.

Kris Welham crossed the whitewash four times while former Wests forward Ben Galea chipped in with two and Matt Cook and Rhys Lovegrove made up the scoring.

It goes from bad to worse for the Quins who remain bottom of Super League with just one victory and ex-Manly forward Luke Williamson's try was little more than a consolation.

Former Canterbury half-back Daniel Holdsworth was the catalyst as Salford City Reds pulled off a shock 30-18 win against Huddersfield Giants.

Holdsworth scored seven goals and a try as Salford, under the guidance of former South Sydney coach Shaun McRae, kick-started their Super League campaign against Nathan Brown's men.

Adam Sidlow, Ashley Gibson and Steve Tyrer all crossed for the Reds while David Hodgson, Larne Patrick, Leroy Cudjoe and Paul Whatuira grabbed tries for Huddersfield.

England scrum-half Kyle Eastmond underlined his growing status in the game as he masterminded St Helens' 52-18 victory over Castleford Tigers.

Eastmond scored two tries and kicked eight goals at The Jungle while Francis Meli and James Roby grabbed doubles and Tony Puletua, Leon Pryce and Maurie Fa'asavalu got one apiece.

Former Manly and Penrith wing Chris Hicks scored a hat-trick as Warrington kept pace with league-leaders Wigan courtesy of a 29-10 win at Hull FC.

Australian hooker Michael Monaghan and Richie Myler also grabbed tries as the Wolves picked up the two points.

Meanwhile, Bradford continue to hold a play-off place in Super League after a narrow 20-16 victory over Crusaders at Odsal.
