England's Banahan cited for 'lifting' tackle

England wing Matt Banahan is to face a disciplinary hearing after being cited for an alleged dangerous tackle in the 15-9 tour match win over the Australian Barbarians in Gosford on Tuesday.

South African citing commissioner Andrew Prior charged Banahan with a "lifting tackle" on Barbarians centre Berrick Barnes 26 minutes into the game.

Now Banahan will face a disciplinary hearing, conducted by judicial officer Peter Hobbs of New Zealand, at the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) offices in Sydney on Wednesday.

England have now had a player cited after all three matches of their tour of Australia.

Lock Dave Attwood had two stamping charges thrown out after last week's 28-28 draw with the Barbarians, when England argued successfully that the citing commissioner should not have been an Australian official.

England wing Mark Cueto was found not guilty of a dangerous tackle on Barnes in last weekend's Test loss to the Wallabies at a hearing in Sydney on Monday.

Banahan may well not be involved in this weekend's second Test in any event but a guilty verdict would rule him out of both the match in Sydney and England's tour finale against the New Zealand Maori next week.
